Medical transcriptionists (MTs) transform the oral dictation of healthcare providers into written text for print or electronic storage.
The MTs are specialists in medical language and healthcare documentation who interpret and transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., editing dictated
material for grammar and clarity as necessary and appropriate.
Medical transcription is a great work at home job or outside career. There are a lot of opportunities available to enter this
field of work with minimal experience and costs.
From the large national medical transcription companies to small one-person companies, each provides an essential service for the medical community.
The need for medical transcriptionists currently outpaces the graduates from qualified institutions and pool of qualified workers. Qualifications for work include a
knowledge of medical terminology and good typing skills.
Through the American Association for Medical Transcriptionists you can attain a certify medical transcriptionist (CMT) designation and a Registered Medical Transcriptionists (RMTs) designation.
Two years of transcription experience in the acute care (or equivalent) setting is required to take the CMT certification examination and you can challenge the Registered Medical Transcriptionists (RMTs) designation at any time.
Having either certification would make searching for a job easier, but you can still get a good job without it.
